The Borana lost big
time in the current conflict with the Gabra
community. The Borana community has lost ground
on three fronts.
·
The
political arena
·
Property and human lives.
·
Credibility in regards to supremacy in the area
and their majority status
The
Borana community lost much of its political
influence in Kenya after losing the Marsabit
County governorship, senator, and woman
representative in the Kenya Genreal Election
this year. Currently, they are seen as an
anti-peace element in Ethiopia based on their
association with the Oromo Liberation Front (O.L.F.).
Both Kenyan and Ethiopian governments see them
as trouble makers due to the fact that the so
called last remaining O. L. F. rebels have been
hiding with the help of the Borana community in
Marsabit County and in the Borana region of
Southern Ethiopia.
The Borana community
elected officials and elders are claiming that
the Ethiopian military is stoking the conflict
in Moyale. If so, then, why are they objecting
to the deployment of KDF? Rhetoric like that is
the cause of their questionable credibility. It
doesn’t make sense to complain about an invasion
of foreign armed militias while also turning
away your own government army who come and
protect you, your family and property.
That is a credibility problem.
“MPs
Ali Rasso (Saku), Roba Duba (
Moyale)
and Mohamud Ali, a former
Moyale
MP, Sunday claimed
Ethiopia
was using its military and local militias to
hunt down Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rebels.”
If they already knew about military operation
against O.L.F. why have they allowed Oromo
rebels to roam within their community?
According
to credible information received from Moyale, 20
out of 27 reported losses of human lives were
from the Borana community including this heavily
armed Oromo liberation front rebel shown on the
photo here.
Furthermore, 80% of reported 70, 000 Butiye
residents that were fled to Ethiopia for their
safety are from the Borana community.
Butiye
section of Moyale town is up in smoke due to the
fighting
The
majority of the reported burned down houses
belong to the Borana community. So, this
community lost not only their political
influence, but also lost their livelihoods
resulting from the separation of family and
disruption of their kids’ educations.
The Borana community needs to
reassess their relationship with the Oromo
rebels and choose what is best for the
community. Also, it should abandon the fighting
with its neighbors and learn to live in peace
with all their fellow neighbors. The era of
Rebel era has gone for good and the whole world
has become one global community.
