News Update From Moyale, Western Gharri Region,
Southern Ethiopia January
04, 2010 GSG member |
According
to news reports made by BBC Somali radio
services, an unspecified numbers of animals have
died from drinking washed off rain water from
contaminated gold mines in Guji Zone, and
subsequently over hundred protesters objecting
to residential area gold mining were arrested
Many gold mining communities around the
developed nation states, "cyanide leaching,
spent ore (tailings) and mercury are stored in
ponds with liners that are intended to contain
the contaminated waste."
Many of those ponds have leaked or broken
causing irreversible damage to both the
environment and its inhabitants. If those sorts
of accidents are happening in countries with
tougher environmental protection measures, then
imagine what will happen to the indigenous
Gharri people? Already, there have been reports
that many animals living around the Dawa river
have began having premature babies and many of
new born calves have died. This shows that the
Dawa river water has already been contaminated
by toxic chemicals used in the Shakiso gold mine
areas where the Dawa river originates.
As far as we know the Ethiopian government do
not have any tangible plans to protect its
citizens from any man made toxic cyanide or
mercury..
Therefore, it is totally unacceptable that this
government had allowed gold mining in heavily
populated Shakiso area in Guji Zone, and ALLO
Hulluqo Village in Moyale District in Southern
Ethiopian by issuing mining licenses without
having any environmental protection measures in
place
In both cases, the government issued licenses,
and allowed gold mining in residential areas
without any inquiries of the company or
discussion with residents and regional
government. This show the government's lack of
concern or regard for its citizens
According to very reliable sources, anyone with
money will not be denied a license to mine. The
only requirement is to have one hundred thousand
Birr. Therefore, the Ethiopian government has
chosen a worthless deals over its indigenous
people's land right, water, and their
environment that their livelihoods depends on.
We believe that there is a catastrophes waiting
to happen both in human lives and animals if the
Ethiopian government continues choosing
corporate profits over people and environment..
In the western Gharri
region, almost all of the ponds in the Moyale
District are filed up by the
Laag Surray
river along with numerous creeks and streams
during the rainy season. So, what will happen to
Gharri people and their animals when the rain
water washes off all the contaminated gold mine
wastes into rivers and creeks that supplies
drinking waters for both human and animals?
In fact, it is safe to say that the government
doesn't care for its people. There is no
government or rule of law existing in rural
areas of the country, especially when it comes
to the Ethiopian Somali citizens. The Ethiopian
constitution and rule of law is not applicable
at all in Kilil5 Somali origin.
