The
situation in Western Gharri region is still very
volatile. Despite the
ongoing peace conference involving high ranking government officials’ region
four and five administrators, the situation is still not settled. The Gharri and
the Oromo People Democratic Organization are still far from a compromise on the
land issues.
According to our informants,
the Oromo region officials are continuing to fuel and arm the local Oromo
peasants and are undermining ongoing peace talks.
Although the Gharri people
have returned to their villages and towns, the Oromo peasants have not returned
to their villages or areas that they fled from. So, that in itself is a sign of
the Oromo’s unwillingness to peaceful coexistence.
However, the Ethiopian government and local officials
have worked out a deal to bring both sides together to meet face to face at El
Gof town today on March 19, 2009, in an effort to find lasting peace and
tranquility between the Gharri and Oromo neighbors.
